E38 BMW model byl základem pro roky 1994 až 2001 automobilů BMW řady 7. To nahradilo BMW E32 v roce 1995 a sám byl nahrazen BMW E65/E66 pro 2002 modelového roku.
E38 modely byly nabízeny buď s pěti-stupňovou automatickou nebo manuální převodovkou, 730d, 740d, 740i/iL, a 750i/iL měl 5-rychlostní automatická ZF standard. Motor varianty v Evropě byly 725tds, 728i, 730i, 730d, 735i, 740i (4,0 a 4,4 L), 740d a 750i. V Americas, byly modely prodávány jako 740i, 740iL a 750iL. 740i/iL byly poháněny motorem V8 4,4 L. Základní ceny v roce 2001 bylo v USA 62.900 dolarů pro 740i, USA 66.900 dolarů pro 740iL a USA 92.100 dolarů pro 750iL. Podstatně vzácnější 5,4 L V12 byla BMW vlajková loď vozidlo s 5,4 L 322 koní (240 kW) motor, který sdílí rovněž Rolls-Royce Silver Seraph. V8 a V12 auta již dlouho-rozvor varianty, s "L" dodal na označení. Vzácné evropské výkonné dlouho-rozvorem kombi model byl také produkoval, volal BMW L7, k dispozici je i 740iL (4,4 L V8) a 750iL (5,4 L V12) varianty. Ochrana Line světlo-obrněná vozidla byly stavěny od 2000-2001, opět s využitím 740iL a 750iL platforem, a cena v USA 99.100 dolarů a 124.400 dolarů v USA, resp. Tyto modely zahrnovaly neprůstřelnou vestu, kulička-odolné sklo a run-flat pneumatik.
Vlastnosti E38 řady 7 včetně high-tlakové myčky světlometů, auto-xenonové HID světlomety vyrovnání, moc moonroof, zvukový systém s 14 reproduktory a čtyřmi subwoofery, stejně jako 6-disků CD měnič, palubní satelitní navigace a déšť-senzor. Jiné rysy zahrnovaly automatické klima kontrolní systém s separate ovládací prvky pro řidiče a spolujezdce, tři-postoj paměti systému pro sedadlo řidiče, bezpečnostní pás-výška, nové kolo volantu a vnější zrcátka. Front-sedadlo boční airbagy a systém ochrany hlavy (HPS) byl také standardní. Vůz vybaven all-kožený interiér s Burl ořech čalouněním. Nepřetržitého pohybu-Active Comfort sídla technologie byla zavedena v roce 1998 s cílem zlepšit komfort a snižují únavu řidiče a spolujezdce.
Když byla E38 vyřazen v roce 2001 dělat cestu pro novou E65, prodej E38s zvýšily výrazně v autě poslední měsíce produkce lidí se stěhoval do koupit auto před tím, než byl nahrazen. E65 radikální styling a iDrive zpočátku nebylo dobře-přjímal spotřebitelů, takže použitý E38s zvýšila hodnota poptávky se zvýšilo. Rovněž přispívá k E38 pokračující popularita byla jeho vzhled v několika filmech, jako je Zítřek nikdy neumírá, Transporter, a The Game. E38 740i vystupoval v BMW Film Ambush, i když to bylo jen vybavený vůz v řadě má být nahrazen následujícím roce.
